How to Make Butterbeer at Home - Harry Potter's Favorite Drink Recipe

0 comments Thursday, July 14, 2011
Everyone knows Harry Potter's favorite thing to do is meet his besties Ron and Hermione for a nice mug of butterbeer, best served by Madam Rosmerta at the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade. But I'll bet you didn't
know that you don't have to go all the way to Universal Islands of Adventure's Wizarding World of Harry Potter to get your very own butterbeer to share with your friends.

Butterbeer's flavor,  according to J.K.Rowling herself is "a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch", and can be served hot in foaming tankards or nice and cold in a bottle. In Orlando's Universal Wizarding World of Harry Potter you can have one served cold with butterscotch-like foam on top or as a frozen slush.

If you can't make it all the way to Orlando, you can make some for yourself and whoever you'd like to share it with right at home with these varying recipes, depending on your tastes. It might not be as good as Madam Romerta's at the Three Broomsticks pub in Hogsmeade, but I'm sure even Albus would have loved to try anyone's version of Butterbeer. Try your hand at making some.

Things You Will Need

Ingredients are varied depending on recipes listed below.

Step 1

On with the Butterbeer recipes!
These are sub-divided by ease of preparation due to number of ingredients or steps to complete.

SIMPLE RECIPES

Recipe #1

It cannot get any simpler than this!

Ingredients:

8oz ginger ale or cream soda
2-3 tablespoons of butterscotch syrup

Directions:

1. Mix in a tall glass and serve over ice

Recipe #2

Just as easy as Recipe #1 but for adults.

Ingredients:

1 cup butterscotch schnapps
7 cups cream soda (2 liter bottle)

Directions:

1. Carefully mix just before serving, adding the schnapps to the soda then stirring gently to mix well, or the fizz will dissipate too soon

Recipe #3

This one's mostly like Recipe #1 with the addition of butter.

Ingredients:

1 cup club soda or cream soda
1/2 cup butterscotch syrup
1/2 tablespoon butter

Directions:

1. Measure butterscotch and butter into a 16 oz. glass

2. Microwave on high for 60-90 seconds, or until syrup is bubbly and butter is completely melted

3. Stir and cool for 30 seconds

4. Slowly mix in club soda. Mixture will fizz quite a bit

5: Serve

Hot Butterbeer
Recipe #4
Ingredients:

5 cups of milk
1 cup of butterscotch chips
2 tsp. butter

Directions:

1. Heat milk in a small saucepan over medium-high heat, but do not boil

2. Add the butterscotch chips and butter, stir well until butter is melted

3. Blend with a mixer to make it frothy (a stick blender works best)

4. Sprinkle w/ nutmeg and cinnamon and serve.

Recipe #5

Ingredients:

4 tablespoon butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 cup warm milk
1 x scant tablespoon vanilla
Pinch salt

Directions:

1. Heat butter in saucepan and melt, stirring until butter bubbles

2. Add sugar and stir slowly over medium heat until medium brown in color

3. Heat milk in microwave and pour into blender

4. Blend on low and slowly add sugar mixture

5. Add vanilla and salt

6. Blend until completely mixed

7. Serve

1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons hot chocolate powder

Recipe #7

Basically, this is a yummy butterscotch/ root beer float.

Ingredients:

1 quart butter-brickle or vanilla ice cream
1/4 cup butterscotch syrup
32 oz root beer
Optional: whipped cream and chopped nuts

Directions:

1. Place 4 (16-ounce) glasses in freezer and chill for at least 20 minutes

2. Mix ice cream and root beer in a blender until combined

3. Divide between the frosted glasses

4. Top each glass with whipped cream and nuts, if desired

5. Serve with spoons and straws

Recipe #8

This one is the most complex on this list.

Haven't tried this one...so beware!

Ingredients:

1 pint of vanilla ice cream, softened
1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) butter, at room temperature
1/3 cup light brown sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 bottle (3 cups) sparkling apple cider

Directions:

1. Allow ice cream to soften, about 30 minutes, and bring butter to room temperature, about 2 hours

2. Blend butter, sugar, and spices in large bowl

3. Add to ice cream and freeze

4. Heat sparkling cider in a pot until warm but still carbonated (at least 3 minutes)

5. Fill each glass with a scoop of ice cream mixture and pour warmed cider over ice cream

6. Serve

Whichever recipe you choose, I'm sure your little Harry Potter's, Hermione's and "Wittle Won-Won's" will love it!!
